With technological advancement especially the evolution and availability of smartphones, home automation is accessible for all. The consumers find it easier to control through their smartphones. Processing with digital products is just a matter of single touch.

Home automation is almost a four-decade-old digital system that never flourished earlier in the Indian real estate sector. The unaffordable product servicing issues, limited functionality, and the necessity for wiring of appliances made this system less preferred by the people.

However, the scenario is different today. With technological advancement especially the evolution and availability of smartphones, home automation is accessible for all. The consumers find it easier to control through their smartphones. Processing with digital products is just a matter of single touch. New-age products such as Wi-Fi enabled wireless products have also redefined the home automation system with enhanced functionality as modern developers are developing the products.

Home buying until a few decades ago was a luxury that few could afford. Homebuyers would aim for any home that was available within his/her budget. He/she accumulated funds for years and then actually buy a house. However, an increase in the availability of home loans after the 1980s stimulated the industry of real estate in the country.

The most significant influence was seen in the metropolitan and tier-1 cities, as it brought home ownership within reach of most tax-payers. With increasing consumer demand for homes and commercial spaces, developers began experimenting by offering value-added lifestyle amenities such as swimming pools, clubhouses, gymnasiums, imported fittings, Italian marble floorings, eco-friendly products, and concierge services, to attract maximum buyers towards their products. At present, these amenities have become a standard part of the offerings, and consumers expect these as a part of their lifestyle convenience.

Homebuyers, especially the millennial buyers are well-informed in their choices and look at investing in smart home projects that are designed to accommodate home automation services. The young home buyers want complete control of their homes. New age home automation products tend to provide nearly all conveniences – from controlling the exterior of the house, entry to the house, to indoor activities such as playing music, switching on and off the devices, ordering food, etc.

The most important feature of home automation is considered for senior citizens in the family. For example, in case of emergencies, the system can be voice configured to call for medical assistance. The voice-enabled devices such as Google Home and Amazon Alexa have made the process smooth and successful.

The real estate industry has been through several transformations over the past few decades, and home automation is potentially the next transformation to impact home buyers and developers. Apart from the necessities and world-class amenities, the big players in the real estate market are working towards adding home automation products to their list of standard offerings across various projects.
