The Easiest Way To Pay Your Water Bill In Mumbai

The Easiest Way To Pay Your Water Bill In Mumbai

Property related matters in the city of Mumbai are mostly handled by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM). Thus, when it comes to paying your water bill, you will be making the payments to the MCGM.

Also known as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai is the richest city civic body in India. The annual budget for the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai exceeds that of some of India's smaller states. It is also known as one of the richest civic bodies on the continent of Asia.

Formed in 1888 under the Municipal Corporation Act, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai is headed by an IAS Officer that’s appointed as the Municipal Commissioner.

Being the sole body responsible for quenching the thirst of Mumbaikars, the MCGM supplies over 3850 million litres of water to the city every day. This astronomical amount of water is treated at 4 water treatment plants by the MCGM before supplying it to the citizens of Mumbai. The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai sources this water from seven water bodies, both natural and man-made. The seven bodies of water that provide water to Mumbai are Middle Vaitarna, Upper Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Vihar, Tulsi and Tansa.

How Is The Water Bill Generated In Mumbai?

The MCGM has a set procedure for the generation of water bills across the city. The MCGM made a resolution in 2012 to only increase the water tax by a maximum of 8% every year. The Municipal Corporation makes most of its revenue from sources like the Property tax and the water tax in the city.

The water tax or charges are set by the BMC as per the usage of the supplied water. The following are the current water charges in Mumbai.

1. Rs. 5.22 per 1000 litres of water for domestic usage.

2. Rs. 2.91 per 1000 litres of water for usage in slums.

3. Rs. 9.20 per 1000 litres of water for Commercial usage.

4. 70% of water tax for Sewerage.
