Do you know which is the oldest operational metro service in India? Well, it is the Kolkata metro. Conceptualized in the 1920s and serving the city since 1984, the Kolkata metro is the first metro network in India and currently accommodates more than 7 lakh people daily. The Metro Railway, Kolkata, and Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) own and operate the Kolkata metro.

Update: On May 22, 2023, for the first time in the history of India, the Kolkata Metro introduced a pickup and drop-off facility. This move will enable commuters to send and receive their parcels during the Green Line service hours.

Kolkata Metro Route & Lines

The daily timings of the Kolkata metro are 6:45 a.m. to 10:45 p.m. (Mon-Sat) and 9:50 a.m. to 9:55 p.m. (Sunday). The Kolkata Metro fare ranges from Rs 5 to Rs 25, and the maximum speed the metro runs at is 80 km/hr.

Blue Metro Line In Kolkata

This 32.2km long Kolkata metro Blue line starts in Dakshineswar, and ends at Kavi Subhash. Kolkata’s blue line travels through some of the city's most well-known and populated parts in the north-south direction.  

Inaugurated on October 24, 1984, it is the 1st line of the Kolkata metro. Each train under the blue line has eight carriages and travels at a top speed of 55 km/h with a headway of 5-7 minutes.

Green Metro Line In Kolkata

Kolkata’s Green metro line is addressed as the East-West metro line because of its alignment. It was made open for public use in October 2020. This Kolkata metro line connects the Salt Lake Sector V region with Phool Bagan. A further extension is also under discussion, where the Green Line will connect Teghoria and Howrah. The Green Line Kolkata metro route map is also slated to have an underwater section below the Hooghly River.

Purple Metro Line In Kolkata (Under Construction) 

Commercial operations of the Kolkata metro's purple line began on January 2, 2023. Six stations are under construction: Joka, Thakurpukur, Sakherbazar, Behala Chowrasta, Behala Bazar, and Taratala. While these six are part of Phase 1, the remaining two phases consist of Esplanade to Majerhat (after Phase 1) and Joka to Diamond Park (after Phase 2).
