What is TAN?

TAN is an acronym for the Tax Deduction & Collection Account Number. It is a ten-digit alpha-numeric identification number issued by the Income Tax Department of India to companies and individuals.

TANis used to collect or deduct tax at source and file tax returns. It helps you keep track of your tax-related payments received and made by an entity or individual.

Why Is It Important to Know Your TAN?

It is crucial to know your TAN in case of:

  • TDS/TCS return (including any e-TDS/TCS return)

  • TDS/TCS payment challan

  • TDS/TCS certificates

If you fail to quote your TAN, a penalty of INR 10,000 is levied, and the Income-Tax Department would not accept your TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) payments, as per Section 203A.

It is crucial to remember that your PAN (Permanent Account Number) cannot act as an alternative for your TAN. They are issued for different purposes and cannot be used as alternatives to each other unless the Income Tax Department allows it for some reason.

It is also paramount to know your TAN as it helps in the identification of taxpayers and ensures the taxes are paid on time. It assists the government in tracking and monitoring the tax collection process. It is crucial to remember that the filed tax returns are not approved by the TAN facilitation centres in India without TAN. The banks do not accept any challan for the TDS/TCS without TAN.
